Maksymilian Kolbe
Maximilian Kolbe was a Polish Franciscan friar. During World War II he was arrested by the Nazis and put in Auschwitz concentration camp. Every time someone tried to escape from the camp the other prisoners were punished. Kolbe offered to be punished instead of another prisoner. He died not long after. He is now a saint.

Lech Wałęsa
Lech Wałęsa is a Polish politician and trade-union organizer. He co-founded Solidarność (Solidarity). Solidarność helped end communist power in Poland. As a result of his fight for human rights Lech Wałęsa won the Nobel Peace Prize. He also served as the President of Poland from 1990 to 1995.
