Qatar is in Western Asia. It is an peninsula which is surrounded by the Persian Gulf on three sides and Saudi Arabia on the fourth. It is mainly flat, gravelly desert but there are also some sand dunes and marshes. Qatar was under Ottoman and British rule until 1971, when the country declared independence. Qatar has been ruled by the Al Thanis since the early 19th century.
The population of Qatar is around 2 million. However, of that 2 million only about a quarter of the population is Qatari. Most of the people living and working in Qatar are from countries such as the Philipines, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nepal and Bangladesh.

- There are very few natural water sources in Qatar so sea water is desalinated for people to use in their homes.
- Arabic is Qatar's official language but a lot of English is spoken in Qatar because there are many foreign workers working there. As well as English and Arabic many other languages are spoken: Bahasa Indonesia, Hindi, Malayalam, Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Nepali, Sinhalese, Bengali and Tagalog.
- Qatar is famous for its camels. Camel racing is very popular.
- The weekend in Qatar is on Friday and Saturday.
- People start work very early in the morning and finish in the early afternoon. This is because the weather is very hot in the summer time. A lot of shops close between mid-day and four in the afternoon for a siesta. They stay open late into the evening.
- The currency of Qatar is the riyal.
