Inside a Thai Home
Some people in Thailand live in modern apartments and houses.
However, some people live in traditional houses. Traditional Thai houses are usually made from wood or bamboo. They are generally raised on stilts and the roofs are usually steep gabled roofs. The design of the houses varies from place to place.
You should remove your shoes before entering the house.
The kitchen is not like the kitchens we are used to seeing.
Some traditional storage containers, such as these, are still used:
Below you can see some dishes which are used to prepare and present food.
Bedrooms in Thailand vary from house to house. In some houses people sleep on mattresses on the floor. In other houses they sleep on beds with metal or wooden frames.
The bathroom is tiled. There is a shower and a very small bath in which you can stand up. There is a drain in the floor so that the water runs out. There is also a toilet and sink. In this house there is a Western style toilet but in other houses you would find a squat toilet like you would find in other Asian countries.

The space under the house is used for storage.

A spirit house is a shrine to the spirits of the land on which a house is built. The house is built to appease the spirit who occupied the land on which the house was built. The spirit house usually looks like a miniature house or temple. It is placed on a pillar. Offerings are often left at the house for the spirits.
